‘Where we were’ – Vivian Ammerlaan, Marlike Marks, Marc Nolte, Sanne
Romeijn, Jet Siemons, Dineke Versluis
Ballon Rouge presents 'Where we were', the first exhibition at its new location on Zaagmolendrift 12.
The exhibition approaches landscape as a living organism—constantly shifting, layered with memory, culture, and human action. Far from a static backdrop, landscape emerges here as experience and construction: something that can be felt, shaped, and transformed. Each artist contributes a distinct perspective—personal, political, poetic, analogue, or digital—yet all investigate how physical environments resonate as images that endure.
Vivian Ammerlaan’s Primal Mountains presents collages evoking a primordial origin. Marlike Marks’s Sunflower Lane captures intimacy and friendship unfolding in an allotment garden. In Battle Ground, USA, Marc Nolte explores the tension between beauty and unease in the American landscape. Sanne Romeijn’s Under the Same Sun portrays millennials navigating change, their dreams and vulnerabilities framed in landscapes and portraits. Jet Siemons’s The Witte Wieven Archive revisits Dutch folklore of ghostly women in mist and hills, balancing belief and doubt. Dineke Versluis’s Connecting Landscapes transforms archival photos into layered new compositions.
Together, these six perspectives reflect on landscape as a dynamic meeting ground of nature, culture, and identity.
