Hester Oerlemans, solo exhibition

Hester Oerlemans' work explores the contrasts between the domestic and the nomadic, the familiar and the exotic, while addressing the complexities of global migration. She is drawn to vibrant colors and patterns, and her art features direct, unvarnished drawings that reflect her creative process. Oerlemans achieves a unique balance in her linework, which she translates into larger paintings using stencils and spray cans instead of traditional brushes. Through her simple compositions, she captures the fragility and strength of those affected by migration and globalization.

Collaborating with artists is an important aspect of Hester Oerlemans' work. She sees herself not only as a curator but also as an initiator: someone who makes it possible to realize exhibitions together with artists.
In 2010, she established the project space Ozean on the site where her studio is located, allowing her to experiment with the space repeatedly and showcase special solo presentations by international artists. The space existed for five years, and in 2015, it was awarded the prize of the Berlin Senat für Kultur for one of the best project spaces in Berlin.
At ROOF-A, she also created a presentation in a second space, where she engages in a dialogue with fellow and friendly artists Maria Roosen and Gijs Assmann. The iconic pairs of breasts by Maria Roosen as givers of life, the Mary/Muse/Madonna by Gijs Assmann as a source of strength and a promise for the future and a selection of paintings by Hester Oerlemans in which she depicts in simple compositions the fragility and power of an existence that has been set adrift by migration and globalization.
