‘Flowerstones’ – Audrey Large

Audrey Large (b. 1994) is a French artist and designer based in Rotterdam whose practice navigates between object design and digital sculpture. She Graduated Cum Laude from the Design Academy Eindhoven (MA Social Design, 2017) and subsequently joined the residency program at the Jan van Eyck Academy (2019-2020).

Her work explores the potential of digital modeling and manufacturing tools to produce new formal languages specific to the virtual realm. Doing so, it profoundly challenges the authenticity of sight and our perception of materiality. Her process often begins with an intuitive gesture, sculpting directly in the digital space offered by a virtual reality set. This method allows her to infuse the machine’s space with a sense of sensitivity and human integrity: the models are not computer-generated, but rather shaped by each movement of her hand extruding a soft digital material at the tip of her controller.

Through sensual rather than discursive decisions, such as the use of materials with ambiguous surfaces, her work sparks powerful metaphysical commentary on how we perceive our material world, questioning what is real and what belongs to representation, ultimately subverting these distinctions.
